Show of Kathak dance and Indian Music or Rajasthan

The term “Mehfil” means “Indian music concert”. The group is composed of 5 musicians and dancers, all coming from a single family of artists from the north of India. Kamal Kant, dancer and artistic director, as well as Koshal Kumar Panwar, tabla player, are sons and pupils of Guru Girdhari Maharaj, the master of Jaipur Gharana (school in Jaipur). The dancers, Megha Kamal, Ajay Rathore, and vocalist/harmonium player Ramesh Meena are also members of the large family of artists, and were also trained by Girdhari Maharaj. The training was initiated by Kamal Kant, who reunites his whole family around the dance and music inherited from their ancestors

Years ago, the group presented in the houses of noblemen and the palaces of the Maharajas, and the privilege to attend a show was reserved for the elite. The comfortable setting allowed one to savour the magic of the music and the prowess of the dance. Today, the objective of the group is to make known to as many people as possible this traditional art form. The strength of Mehfil resides in the rhythmic exchange between musicians and dancers, that incites the audience to see a single plane in the show as it unfolds. The spectator thus becomes directly involved in the presentation, to his or her further enjoyment.

Mehfil will help you discover the universe of sacred dances from Indian mythology, rhythms from Kathak dance (originator of flamenco), Khyal songs, and poetry in an intimate setting. Dance, an essential element of the show, contains both a technical aspect requiring great virtuosity, and a narrative aspect; the dancer relates through his gestures episodes from mythologie, and mimes emotions or movements of the soul…The alternation and complementarity between the dance and the music makes the recital dynamic, and creates a real show between dance choreography, music, song, and percussion.
